In the News: Students dedicate day to Fibromyalgia awareness

This year’s Fibromyalgia Awareness Day was celebrated at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday with an all-day event, “Make Fibromyalgia Visible.” The day included a Wellness Fair, educational seminars, walks to raise awareness and musical performances. The event was hosted by the National Fibromyalgia Association in coordination with CSUF’s Fibromyalgia Research and Education Center. The event began at 11:30 a.m. and continued until 8:00 p.m. …

A Wellness Fair with over 20 exhibits was available all day, and included health screenings, information about FM, family activities, massages and product and food samples. A few of the exhibitors present were the Aadara Yoga and Healing Arts Studio, Apex Research Institute and the Arthritis Foundation. The event also included 25 free educational seminars presented by experts on a variety of topics related to FM such as “Nutrition and Brian Function,” “Spitituality: The Wellness Connection,” “Role of the Caregiver” and “Therapeutic/Restorative Yoga.”

After the seminars, the third annual 1k and 5k “Walk(s) of FAME (Fibromyalgia Awareness Means Everything)” began. Participants walked around campus and were cheered on by friends, family and event volunteers. …

… this was one of hundreds of community walks that were organized internationally around May 15.

The walk was followed by dinner and the “Lights of Hope” celebration. During the celebration, 10 large cranberry-colored candles were lit in honor of over 10 million people in the U.S. who are affected by FM. White candles were lit to honor individuals who suffer from the illness.

In the News: Her son’s music helps ease a mom’s pain

At first, doctors thought that Phyllis Talarico had suffered from a stroke.

Her eye was drooping, she felt disoriented. She was exhausted and in pain.

It took 17 doctors before the Yorba Linda woman was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a little-understood and painful disorder that affects millions of people – mostly women – in the United States.

Nearly two decades after her diagnosis, Talarico, 64, has become a standard-bearer in the fight to raise awareness about the disorder. To that end, she asked her son, a Christian youth minister and musician, to write a song for her.

“Vigil Song,” is being recorded by R&B artist Tony Terry, who is performing with Pasquale on Saturday at a Fibromyalgia Awareness Day hosted by Cal State Fullerton.

The free event, featuring workshops, health screenings, a 5K walk and musical performances, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. It will take place near the Kinesiology and Health Science Building at the campus.

Terry, a well-known musician who topped the Billboard charts several times in the 1990s, has a personal reason for recording the song. His wife, Larondra, has been battling fibromyalgia since the birth of their son in 2006.

In the News: Make Fibromyalgia Visible May 12

The National Fibromyalgia Association (NFA) is encouraging organizations worldwide to make fibromyalgia visible by increasing awareness and understanding during Fibromyalgia Awareness Day on May 12. Allsup, a nationwide provider of Social Security disability representation and Medicare services is offering free posters to support the observance and provide information on the syndrome that affects an estimated five million Americans…

Allsup works with hundreds of individuals with fibromyalgia each year and appreciates the challenges they face in dealing with an often misunderstood and misdiagnosed condition. Fibromyalgia is often referred to as “invisible” because you can’t see pain. People sometimes have a difficult time believing a person with a healthy appearance and positive outlook can be experiencing profound symptoms and limitations.
